July 2020 - Warp speed.

With deadlines approaching July was a busy month.  Two work days a week were scheduled and well attended.  Construction  was winding down and efforts turned to scraping, sanding and painting.

Wayne and I installed the last of the louvers.

They look nice in the windows as well as provide some protection from the sun.

Craig made trim strips to go below the louvers to cover up the old framing.  These were screwed in place.

Then treated with clear sealer.

The primary construction project during this time was installation of the upper berths.  First the hinges were installed.

The platforms are heavy and bulky with a narrow aisle in the car to navigate.  Here Wayne and Don are doing the heavy lifting.

Getting the platforms in position was a three person job by Ron, Wayne and Craig.

Craig built an adjustable frame to stabilize the platforms.  The aisle edges are resting on the brass fittings in the seat posts and the far edge is adjusted until level.

Finally the hinges were screwed into the wall of the car.

Occasionally some fitting was necessary so the berth could move up and down freely.

There were some parts not used in the latch to hold the berths in the "up" position so Ron re-engineered them to make safety catches.  In this photo he has removed one end of a couple of the these pieces.

This photo shows part of the brass has been ground away.

I am skipping ahead into August with this photo but it shows one of the latch locks fastened in place with the flange over the top of the hinge to prevent it from releasing.  Also of note in this photo is the number "4" above the latch.  Each berth is numbered with a decal in the same order that was done originally.  There are a total of ten, five on each side of the car.

The water tanks in the men's washroom have been installed.  They are filled from above through the vent in the ceiling.

The round cap with the handle covers the filler access for the water tanks.

Craig had a double walled vent made for the stove to vent through the roof.

The vent has been installed in the corner next to the women's lavatory where the stove will be.

Installation of the clerestory windows was completed this month.  I believe that is Dean's watch in this photo.

Tom made a cardboard pattern for the siding piece in the "teardrop" area under the curved overhang.

Then Craig made the wood to fit.

A lot of time was devoted to sanding this month.  Bill L. is working on the platform steps.

Dean is sanding the clerestory.

Bill L. is scraping and sanding siding.

Wayne is sanding siding for the lower part of the car.  It was primed previously and stored.

As was mentioned previously the clerestory windows are being fastened in place and will not open.  Dean is applying caulk around the edges.

Tom is doing some scraping and priming on the clerestory.

Bill K. braved the Gap to help with the priming.

Thanks to Tom and Don for contributing photos.
